Bond & Fellers go one two in warm up to World Cup
$30,000 CSI2* Summer Classic Grand Prix previews weekend action
August 27, 2010
Langley, BC --- The $30,000 CSI2* Summer Classic at Thunderbird Show Park offered a peek at the World Cup action yet to come this week as California’s Ashlee Bond and Oregon’s Rich Fellers, the points leaders in the North American West World Cup League, went one and two in the order. Bond, aboard her 13 year-old gray Zangersheide mare – GZS Cassira Z, edged out Fellers and McGuinness for the win with a stellar round that had the crowd holding their breath.
Rails plagued competitors, as the majority of the field finished with four faults. Mandy Porter, Tani Zeidler and Brian Morton weren’t able to advance to the jump off, while Jennifer Crooks rode an identical round on each of each of her two mounts, right down to the hundredth of the second. In the end, three riders were able to go clear with Samantha Buirs leading the way.
Buirs and Total Touch led the jump off, putting in a beautiful round with a time of 34.63. With her win in the $50,000 Thunderbird Legacy Grand Prix last week, Buirs has been a strong competitor this season, delivering clear round after clear round.
The bar set by Buirs left some room for Fellers and McGuinness to shave off some time. Always ready to deliver a speed round, the pair made tight turns and quick work of the course, finishing in 30.52 to slide into first.
Bond and GZS Cassira Z have been a popular pair at Thunderbird over the past week and the crowd was quickly caught up in her ride. They were quiet even as she cleared the last fence and crossed the finished line. It looked fast, but was it fast enough?
For Bond, the answer was simple.
“She’s really quick in the air!”
Beating Fellers time by 0.07 of a second, Bond took first place and gave spectators a preview of the action they can expect in Saturday’s World Cup. Bond is currently leading the league in World Cup points, followed by Fellers. Each event provides an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Leipzig, Germany in April 2011.
