Former Driver to Take the Reins as New Voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby
February 26, 2009
Calgary, AB --- The Calgary Stampede is pleased to announce that veteran chuckwagon and rodeo announcer Les McIntyre is the new voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby. McIntyre becomes only the second person in Calgary Stampede chuckwagon history to call the races, taking the reins from the legendary Joe Carbury who retired in 2008 after 45 years.
“This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime,” says McIntrye. “Since I was a child, my dream has been to be involved in the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The GMC Rangeland Derby is the pinnacle of chuckwagon racing, and I look forward to bringing the action to fans, not only in the Grandstand every night, but also to people listening and watching around the world.”
The 55-year-old McIntyre brings a wealth of chuckwagon and rodeo experience to his new position, high in the Eye in the Sky at Stampede Park. As a youngster, he started by sweeping stalls before becoming a trainer, a wagon driver and wagon advertiser. He eventually called his first chuckwagon race in 1985. For the past 24years, he’s called hundreds of races yearly on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) and Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) circuits. McIntyre is also a seasoned rodeo announcer and has been the professional voice of the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton for the past six years.
“Les is an outstanding ambassador for both the sport of chuckwagon racing and the sport of rodeo,” says Paul Rosenberg, Calgary Stampede vice president. “With his experience as both a competitor and announcer, we know that our fans will be professionally entertained and informed every heat and every night at this year’s Stampede and for years to come.”
When not calling chuckwagon races or rodeo, McIntyre is a well-respected livestock and farm sale auctioneer, a career he’s been involved with for nearly 25 years.
McIntrye will officially begin his new role by participating in the 2009 GMC Rangeland Derby Canvas Auction, March 19, 2009, in the Boyce Theatre on Stampede Park and will make his debut as the voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby at this year’s Calgary Stampede, July 3-12.
