Outlaw to Take his Legend Downtown
January 22, 2009
Calgary, AB --- He was one of the greatest animals to ever perform at the Calgary Stampede and now, the legendary red and white speckled bull known as Outlaw will be epitomized in a larger-than-life bronze statue to be placed in the heart of Calgary’s downtown business district.
Through the Calgary Stampede’s Public Art program and in partnership with the Calgary Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Society, a statue of Outlaw has been commissioned and is currently being created by Richard Loffler, a well-renowned bronze sculptor from Regina, Saskatchewan. The statue, depicting Outlaw in full stride, exploding out of a chute, is expected to be completed in 2010 and placed in a prominent downtown Calgary location, soon to be determined.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Calgary CFA Society in bringing this marvelous piece of public art to reality,” says George Brookman, Calgary Stampede president and chairman of the board. “Outlaw was truly a champion in the world of bull riding and this fantastic new bronze will only add to the excitement and pride we have in our western heritage.”
The sculpture of Outlaw is just one of 10 heroic-sized bronze pieces planned by the Stampede’s Public Art committee to be located on Park and around the city of Calgary.
“Outlaw reflects our western heritage and the entrepreneurialism, grit and determination symbolic of the capital markets,” says Wes Peters, project chair, Calgary CFA Society. “CFA Charterholders are proud of what the Calgary investment community has accomplished and we are ‘bullish’ on our city’s increasingly prominent and dynamic role as the financial centre of western Canada.”
A working model of the sculpture will be unveiled tonight in front of a crowd of more than 1,400 members of the Calgary CFA Society, gathering in Calgary this year for their annual Forecast Dinner. The Calgary CFA Society has begun a campaign amongst its members to raise the necessary funds to finance the final bronze of Outlaw.
Outlaw had a magical career in the world of rodeo, being ridden only once in 71 trips out of the chute. In 2004, he played a key role in a promotion between the Calgary Stampede and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), helping to ring the NYSE’s closing bell on July 9.
