Stampede Parade Ready to Roll

June 20, 2008

Calgary, AB --- The legendary Calgary Stampede Parade will roll down its original route on July 4 thanks to the cooperation and tireless work of the local developer, City of Calgary and Stampede Parade officials.

“Hats off to Matthews Development and the City of Calgary for the top priority placed on re-opening this section of Sixth Avenue,” says Parade Committee chair, Jay Barker. “We’re thrilled that come July 4, the traditional route will showcase the exciting parade we have in store.”

“We offer our special thanks to Ledcor for their drive and commitment to meeting this tight timeline," says Jack Matthews, president and chief executive officer, Mathews Development. “We're pleased this road project is complete so Calgarians and spectators around the world can enjoy the Stampede Parade.”

“In true Calgary fashion, the kickoff to The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth will continue in its proud tradition,” says Calgary Mayor David Bronconnier. "On behalf of City Council, I'd like to thank Mathews Development, the Stampede Parade Committee, all the construction workers and city staff who have worked so hard to make sure our parade route is ready. And on behalf of Calgary commuters, I'd really, really like to thank them for getting this road open in record time. Congratulations and Yahoo!"

“The 2008 Calgary Stampede Parade promises to be one of the best ever,” says Barker. “The parade is one of the oldest and most treasured Stampede traditions. Many people camp out on their favourite spots the night before, and by the time the parade rolls down Sixth Avenue at 8:55 a.m., more than 350,000 locals and visitors will line the 4.5 km route through downtown Calgary.”

Patsy Rodgers, the first Stampede Queen, will lead the route as Parade Marshal, joined by nearly 100

former members of Stampede Royalty. The two-hour parade will feature 170 entries with 4,000 participants, including intricate floats, powerful marching bands, horse drawn carriages, western riders and more than 800 horses. In addition, the Parade Prelude offers a diverse mix of entertainment at many intersections along the route, ranging from singers and cheerleaders to fiddling and even belly dancing.

Lucky spectators spotted wearing a cowboy hat are eligible to win one of many great prizes worth a total of over $2.6 million as part of the Get Your Head in a Hat promotion.
