June 20, 2008

Ottawa, ON --- The 22nd annual Bromont CCI Three Day Event in Bromont, QC, hosted the Todd Sandler Challenge June 12–15, 2008, drawing top riders from Canada, United States, France, Great Brittan and Australia. Highlighting the event was the return of CCI 3* three day event competition to Canada, for the first time in over a decade.

Competitors contested both CCI and CIC divisions at the Bromont Olympic Park, the equestrian site of the 1976 Olympics.

Waylon Roberts, 19, of Port Perry, ON, paired with his 2007 Team Silver Medal Pan Am Games mount Paleface, a 13-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred gelding owned by Kelly Plitz, finished in fourth in the CCI 3* division. Sitting in second place after dressage, with a score of 58.7,the pair were clear with 17.8 time penalties over Bromont’s new CCI 3* cross-country course, designed by internationally renowned American course designer, Derek Di Grazia, and beautifully presented by course builder Jay Hambly and his team. Roberts added 32 jumping faults in show jumping to finish with a score of 108.3.

“The three star course was wonderful and a break-through for Canada. I think that it is great that we can get spectators our to watch big, international events like Bromont, because they usually do not get to see a competition of this caliber,” said Roberts. “The competition ran very smoothly, and I hope it is an even bigger success next year.”

American Sharon White riding The King’s Spirit owned by Susan and Peter Barry of Dunham QC won the CCI 3* competition with a score of 78.3 and was presented with the Todd Sandler Challenge Trophy.

In the CCI 2* division, Michelle Mueller, of Port Perry, ON, and Julie-Anne Pring’s nine-year-old Thoroughbred cross gelding, Amistad, finished in third place. Following a dressage score of 50.0, and adding only 10 time penalties on cross-country and eight show jumping penalties, the pair finished on a score of 68.3.

Boyd Martin, of Australia, and Galileo VI, won the CCI 2* division with a score of 47.9.

Nicole Parkin’s win in the CCI 1* division, paired with Lexus, an eight-year-old Hanoverian mare, owned by Nique and Gail Hendrie, was virtually fault free. Leading the field after dressage on a score of 45.4, the pair only added 2.8 cross-country time penalties and no show jumping penalties to win the division on a score of 48.

“Lexus was fabulous. She is ready to upgrade to Intermediate at Grandview in six weeks,” noted Parkin, of Orangeville, ON. “Nique and Gail Hendrie, Lexus’ owners, are wonderful, and they are fabulous supporters of the sport of eventing.”

Close behind Parkin was Peter Barry of Dunham, QC, and his nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Kilrodan Abbott, who finished on his dressage score of 55.7 for second place.

Earning ninth place was Kelli McMullen Temple aboard her six-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Valentine. The duo scored 55.0 in dressage, before moving on to cross-country where they earned 9.6 time faults. In the show jumping round, the pair had one rail and five time penalties giving them a final score of 73.6.

Other Canadians in the standings included Young Riders Meghan Bailie of Enniskillen, ON, who placed 12th with Stryker, and Sarah Talaga of Richmond Hill, ON, who rode Vena to an 13th place finish.

Finishing third in the CIC 2* division was Jenna Kuzenko of Oshawa, ON, and Renegade, her nine-year-old Quarter Horse gelding. American Ashley Leith won the division riding ESB Irish Doctrine on a score of 89.7 penalties.

Winning the CIC 1* division was McMullen Temple, now paired with her six-year-old German Warmblood gelding, Axel Rose. The duo scored 50.7 in dressage, and added just 0.4 time penalties on the cross-country course. Despite two rails and five time penalties in show jumping the pair won the division on a final score of 64.1

“I am particularly pleased with Axel Rose’s performance. The competition at Bromont was really well organized and the course was beautifully presented and very inviting,” remarked McMullen Temple. “It was truly a good educational experience for young horses such as mine.”

Katlyn Hewson of Minden, ON, earned a fourth place finish aboard her 14-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Without A Trace on a score of 80.3, while Anne Zander of Cookstown, ON, placed fifth with Caliente Kisses, her 11-year-old Thoroughbred mare.

Other Canadians in the ribbons included Nicole Robertson, of Uxbridge, ON, and Unexpected Time who placed sixth on a score of 84.5, and Junior Rider Madeline Morra, of Oshawa, ON, who rode Mail Order Bride to a seventh place finish, scoring 90.2.

Since 1999, the CCI Bromont Three Day Event proudly hosts The Todd Sandler Challenge in memory of an aspiring young event rider, Todd Sandler, 18, of Dollard des Ormeaux, QC, who died tragically in a car accident on April 26, 1999, while returning home from the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Todd was one of Canada’s best eventing prospects for the future.
