Kentucky Summer Horse Show Hosts $20,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby

June 16, 2008

Lexington, KY --- The Kentucky Summer Horse Show, produced by Kentucky Horse Shows LLC, will welcome an exciting new addition to its summer schedule. The show, held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington from July 30-August 2, 2008, will feature the $20,000 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Dietrich Insurance and featuring Walsh Harness and Saddlery.

The derby will be held on Sunday, August 3, at 1:00 p.m. in the Walnut Arena. The class has a two-round format that includes a hunter classic course and a handy hunter round.

The International Hunter Derbies were created by the United States Hunter Jumper Association’s High Performance Hunter Committee in hopes of bringing back the historic tradition, sport, and horsemanship of hunters from years past. Kentucky Horse Shows LLC is thrilled to include this unique class at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show.

Bobby Murphy, assistant manager of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, commented, “I’ve been involved with a number of the hunter derbies, and they just get better every time. It is an amazing class that has allowed hunters to take on a new form at our shows. Reflective of the past, I think theses classes have helped our industry transform in the right direction. When it comes to the high performance hunter derbies, we are watching history in the making. Kentucky Horse Shows LLC is thrilled to be a part of this exciting competition.”

The hunter derby will require horses and riders to tackle natural obstacles and varying terrain. Specifications of the classes include natural fences and elements such as coops, natural post and rails, banks, stone walls, aikens, logs, ditches, brush and gates, all set between 1.30m and 1.40m in height. These obstacles simulate those reminiscent of the traditional hunt field. The handy hunter round may include such tests as trotting a jump, opening a gate while mounted, and leading horses over an obstacle.

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show, a recognized World Championship Hunter Rider event, will also feature action-packed jumper classes. Some of these include the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $40,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix, a member event of the AGA grand prix series. Additionally, the Kentucky Summer Classic Horse Show will be held the following week from August 6-10. Highlights of this show include another $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $40,000 RV Sales of Broward Kentucky Classic Grand Prix.

The Hagyard Lexington Classics are two of seven events in the Hagyard Challenge Series, a series of major show jumping competitions held throughout the summer at the Kentucky Horse Park. The series offers $215,000 in prize money, and these two classes count toward the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus.
