Daily Double at Spruce Meadows

Calgary, AB --- In its history there has only been one rider able to master the Nexen Cup Derby course. Successfully defending her title was Beezie Madden (USA) and her stallion Judgement. Madden has yet to incur a fault in the Nexen Cup Derby, a feat no other rider has been able to match.

The rain held off during the day’s first competition but started to pour just as the Nexen Cup was underway. Madden felt the footing held up but said she was glad to finish in one round, “The rain added incentive to not have a jump-off today, considering the weather.” Madden credited her stallion Judgement with her third consecutive “National” Derby win, “He’s a really powerful jumper, he’s really easy on himself and is a great derby horse.”

The Nexen Cup Derby was Madden’s second win of the day after earlier coming away with a win in the ATCO Structures Double Slalom, riding her stallion Conquest II. Madden raced Brianne Goutal (USA) in the final round to claim the title.

It was a busy day for Madden who also laid claim to the Spruce Meadows Canadian Championship. For Madden, it was a perfect way to wrap up the 2008 Spruce Meadows “National” Tournament.

The Spruce Meadows “Continental” Tournament begins Thursday June 12th and will serve as the final opportunity for Canadian riders to make their case for the Olympic team which will be named on June 16th.
